A 1930s ground-floor apartment in the Rivierenbuurt in Amsterdam South. Built in the Amsterdam School style, featuring playful brickwork, staggered facades, decorative window frames, and overhanging gutters. The building was designed under the influence of Berlage and is part of a designated heritage area. Today, the Rivierenbuurt is a popular neighbourhood for both families and students thanks to its convenient location and charming character.

The property was in a fairly dilapidated state and in need of a thorough renovation. The aim was to create a modern layout with as few structural interventions as possible, while keeping the extension shallow in order to preserve the generous garden.

To achieve a modern and functional layout within the existing structure, a subtle yet clever extension was added. The kitchen was moved to a central position in the home, naturally creating a separation between the living and dining areas. This resulted in an open and light-filled space, in which the two zones are still clearly distinguishable. The apartment was expanded from 86 m² to 106 m² and now accommodates a family of four, with three bedrooms and a dedicated home office.

The extension reflects the stylistic characteristics of the Amsterdam School, visible in the choice of materials, proportions, and refined detailing. The layout is composed of three staggered living sections, giving the rear facade a layered sense of depth. Each section corresponds to the original specific functions of the complex – bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom – making the organisation of the home visible from the outside. The new window frames are designed as a contemporary interpretation of the original window details, allowing old and new to blend together seamlessly
