A UNESCO-listed monument stands in the heart of Amsterdam’s canal district, carrying centuries of history. First built as a private residence and later altered over time, it bears the marks of different eras. It remains part of the character of the canal, where grand architecture, everyday living and urban culture meet.

The renovation called for a careful balance between preserving the past and creating homes for today. The existing structure had to be adapted into several apartments without losing its monumental quality. Adding a basement and souterrain made the task technically demanding: daylight, ventilation and liveability all had to be secured, while installations were kept out of sight.

Our approach combined restoration with subtle new additions. Original features were carefully repaired, while new interventions were kept clear and understated. Floor plans were reorganised to bring in more light and space. Sustainable measures were integrated so that the building could look to the future without losing its identity.

The result is a collection of elegant apartments where history and comfort meet. Original elements remain visible, while new work brings in light, comfort and a contemporary feel. Together they create a living environment that keeps the spirit of the city alive.
