De Schuitvaarder
Groningen
At the threshold from the Noorderplantsoen to the Korrewegwijk lies a distinctive site within a designated protected cityscape. It is a lively area of convergence where park, neighborhood, and city flow together, with hospitality on the street level and residences above. The building serves as a communal anchor for residents and visitors alike, enriched with the expressive character of Amsterdam School influences.
This urban landmark, positioned between greenery and city fabric, combines liveliness with identity. Hospitality functions at ground level ensure interaction with the street, while the upper floors provide housing that overlooks both park and city. The result is a genuine place of encounter, where architectural expression and social life are intertwined.
The preservation of the building’s historical essence was the guiding principle. The original 1912 ground floor has been carefully retained, with its restaurant function continuing in the same place. The façade, now clad in natural stone, restores the building’s former dignity and re-establishes the ground floor as an active part of street life.
In contrast, the upper floors added in a later period without heritage value are reimagined in a contemporary architectural language. Their restrained design deliberately contrasts with the historic base, while aligning in materiality with the surrounding context. Subtle detailing ensures refinement rather than dominance, and a partial setback on the second floor lightens the overall mass, lending the building a balanced and layered presence in the urban streetscape
