Voorburg
A typical 1930s street in Voorburg. Wide bay windows, deep roof overhangs. Ground and upper floor apartments repeated in rhythm. The entire neighborhood is built in this style, with the same architectural language. A pre-war expansion area, created for the middle class. Spaciously laid out, with tree-lined streets and a calm atmosphere.
The owner of number 55 wanted more space and faced a choice: move or expand. Adding an extra floor proved the logical option. He opted for generous bedrooms, a luxury bathroom, and terraces at the front and back.
The first design stood in stark contrast to the existing houses. Modern, with strong opposition. It did not align well with the municipality’s plans. A different approach was chosen. The new addition continues the existing architecture. Materials, window frames, and roof edges match what was already there. The form received a contemporary twist, tailored to its use.
The result is a distinctive addition that sets itself apart from the monotony of the street, without falling out of tune. Prefabrication made fast installation possible. And it proved contagious: three neighbors followed with their own rooftop extensions. Each personal, with subtle differences in façades and layout. Together they give the street a new layer and a fresh character. A fine example of smart use of space.
